  • IBC: Fraunhofer HHI shows HEVC Real-time Encoding of UHD Video with High Dynamic

Fraunhofer HHI shows HEVC Real-time Encoding of UHD Video with High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut

Fraunhofer HHI’s leading H.265 / MPEG-HEVC real-time software encoder now integrates HDR processing, to enable HEVC live encoding of 10-bit UHD video with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG). For that, the HEVC encoder conveys video metadata according to international standards, e.g. ITU-R Rec. BT.2020 WCG, SMPTE ST 2084 HDR transfer characteristics and SMPTE ST 2086 mastering display color volume metadata, supporting high luminance and WCG images. The thereby accomplished broader range of color and brightness and an exceptional contrast ratio can be delivered to any preferred end device – creating a realistic, truly immersive experience for its viewers.

So standard fixed curve to expand the dynamic range, will the info be there in the SDR grade to render a good HDR grade, will the be clipping whites in one of the grades, will colour be saturated correctly after the expansion? Let's see at the show at Hall 8 Booth B80.

I will, but expect to hear most of it after the show. Unfortunately IBC makes for late nights, and if I start writing full articles at 1 AM i'll be working on it alll night;-). I have done this in the past, but you can't last multiple days of multiple miles lugging around exhibit halls and then back to conference center and back to halls again, on no sleep. Not after you hit 40, lol.

It looks like the compression folks are now also jumping onto HDR, to complement their 4K offers. Besides Fraunhofer that licensed 4K HEVC codec and technology for inclusion in equipment to Rode & Schwarz that acquired business on top of its traditional transmitter and measurement business to provide a complete broadcast chain, that was used on various trials for live Football matches by Sky Deustland amongst others. There is ATEME and Thomson Video Systems both from France. And I am sure others will follow suit. They need to get this done, camera companies can relax a bit, as they can say we already do 13,14 or perhaps even a bit more F-stops of contrast range

There will be plenty of (Small) production monitors at the Shows, but IBC is not a display show, though it has a seperate conference track hosted by the EDCF, European Digital Cinema Forum, or something similar. But that will start on Moday and I probably be beat before that, as the Conference starts on Thursday.
