Compression start up V-NOVA is seeing uptake of its PERSEUS compression into NTT Data's video encoding solution for on-demand and linear mass distribution. Part of the Nippon Telephone & Telegraph congrlomerat this is yet another enitity to the one we regulalry see  at IBC offering very high-end contribution encoders and decoders.

The currently deployed joint solution adds PERSEUS capabilities to NTT DATA's "Hyper" and "NRT" products.  This allows operators to offer the highest-quality next generation services in the most agile and cost effective manner, tapping into the unmatched quality/bitrate ratio provided by PERSEUS.

At a press conference during the IBC broadcast tradeshow Guido Meardi, V-Nova CEO & co-Founder, explained the rapid adoption across the industry of its alternative videocodec, from glass to glass, in the five months since its release at NAB 2015 to the fact that it runs on existing infrastructure and hardware, alongside existing compression systems. "It is just a software upgrade, no hardware upgrades, that are always difficult and timeconsuming, and often impossible to do, are involved".

Perseus can be used on camera links, and as a lossless codec for contribution offering an alternative for JPEG2000 enabling HD and 4K distribution over public (managed) internet links, at 200 to 300 megabit/s. All the way to mobile delivery at low bitrates as low as 500 kilobit/s for HD, as shown in a trial with UK mobile operator EE.

New deals with encoder manufacturers, including Thomson Video Networks were also revealed, establishing the full chain compression alternative.

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--V-Nova Ltd., a leading provider of video compression solutions, announced today that it has completed a very successful trial of highly efficient HD and UHD/4K video over EE's advanced 4G network.

EE and V-Nova tested the boundaries of mobile video and showed how building in PERSEUS video compression technology to the EE 4G network enables high quality video streaming at a significantly reduced bitrate.

The trial addressed a number of the toughest video delivery challenges for even the most advanced mobile data networks:

transporting high quality UHD/4K content over the mobile network;
delivering HD video to tablets and phones while travelling, and;
providing reliable video services to rural areas, where mobile bandwidth may be limited.
EE and V-Nova tested PERSEUS video compression technology by distributing UHD/4K video over EE’s superfast 4G network in a densely populated area of central London, near Paddington station at rush hour. The 4K content – footage from EE’s ‘Wembley Cup’ series – was streamed to a 65” 4K screen at 50 FPS via the EE ‘Osprey’ 4G WiFi hotspot.

The same content was also delivered reliably in HD format to tablets and phones at bitrates ranging from 300 Kbit/s to 1.5 Mbit/s, both on the road and in a rural location in The New Forest, in the south of England.

A continuous high-quality viewer experience was maintained throughout the 90 mile journey, handing signal over between more than 40 sites, and at the very edge of the EE 4G network.
