  • IBC: HD-SDI turns 12, new chips on their way

Semtech Showcases Hybrid SDI/IP Interoperability of 12G UHD-SDI chips at IBC 2015. of course most equipment doens't even feature HD-SDI at 6 Gigabit/s yet. 12 Gigabit should allow for a single link 4K signal. Currently 4K over HD-SDI is done using four standard 3Gigabit/s HD-SDI connections in parrallel.

CAMARILLO, Calif. – September 10, 2015 – Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, will demonstrate the hybrid interoperability of its 12G UHD-SDI product portfolio by transporting ultra-high definition video over an integrated SDI and IP network at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) exhibition in Amsterdam on September 10-15, stand 10.F46.

The demonstration features a multi-format SDI/IP media gateway from Nevion, a leader in media transport solutions, a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) 10Gbe / 40GbE IP switch and Semtech’s 12G UHD-SDI products—the GS12141 cable equalizer and the GS12181 cable driver. Semtech gearbox technology will be integrated to enable seamless conversion between different UHD-SDI interface profiles.

“Our UHD-SDI interoperability demonstration with Nevion’s VS902 illustrates the realization of a fully uncompressed hybrid SDI / IP infrastructure for UHD-1 production and contribution,” said John Hudson, Director of Strategic Technology and New Business Development for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Product Group. “Nevion is a leader in hybrid media transport solutions, and the VS902 is a class-leading product that interoperates with Semtech’s entire portfolio of UHD-SDI products.”

The VS902 by Nevion is a modular multi-format contribution codec for IP/Ethernet networks. It enables cost-efficient video transport over a common unified platform, accessing virtually any wide-area network or local-area environment, and it provides IP encapsulation and decapsulation of standard definition, high definition and ultra-high definition (via multi-link 3G SDI) signals utilizing the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) ST2022 standards.

“High-performance hybrid SDI/IP solutions are critical in next generation television systems, and the ability to deliver uncompressed UHDTV over COTS IP hardware is a key enabling technology for the adoption of both UHDTV production and hybrid SDI/IP solutions,” said Johnny Dolvik, Chief Product and Development Officer at Nevion. “Semtech is an industry leader in UHD-SDI interfaces, and we are pleased to be able to demonstrate the interoperability between our media gateway and Semtech’s UHD-SDI solutions, and look forward to working further together in the future.”

Semtech’s UHD-SDI products feature ultra-low power consumption and provide industry-leading performance at 12Gbps rates. UHD-SDI is ideal for UHDTV infrastructures, including routers, cameras, monitors, switchers and more. It offers pristine image quality, is backwards compatible with existing SDI systems and is standardized by both SMPTE and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), simplifying UHDTV infrastructure upgrades and reducing risk for broadcasters.

Peter talking to your 'UltraPlayer' vendor I was told that till now basically only Blackmagic has equipment with 12G HD-SDI. They use 4 3G HD-SDI output and four HDMi 1.4 outputs. Ad the SMPTE 2084 EOTF to the projector, and you can play HDR, as it comes out of the camera. 'Dolby Vision is only needed to bring it to the consumer. So, Peter you know what to do...

Not too much equipment is fitted with 6G HD-SDI, as you still need two links for 4K 60P 10 bit/s 4:2:2, so everyone sticks to the practical standard 3G HD-SDI.

Speaking of Blackmagic, it is launching new HD-SDi convertors.

New Teranex Mini Quad Link SDI Converters

We have some new Teranex Mini converter models for handling Quad Link SDI and distribution at all SDI rates up to 12G-SDI.

Since we introduced 12G-SDI products, we have been asked for a solution to convert between modern 12G-SDI equipment and older Quad Link 4K equipment.

These new converters are designed for this task and we have the new Teranex Mini 12G-SDI to Quad Link SDI model and the Quad Link SDI to 12G-SDI model.

A great example is if you wanted to connect Quad Link SDI to the new HyperDeck Studio 12G then you just use the Quad Link SDI to 12G-SDI model to do it. Doing this would let you record from any Quad Link Ultra HD device direct onto the SSD in the HyperDeck Studio 12G.

I personally think that 12G-SDI is much better as it uses only 1 cable instead of 4 cables and it will instantly switch between SD, HD and Ultra HD without changing cabling.

Imagine trying to use 8 separate BNC cables just to plug the input and output of Ultra HD equipment vs 2 12G-SDI cables instead. Then trying to route it would use up most of a large router! So the best solution is to convert any Quad Link SDI Ultra HD products to 12G-SDI with these new Teranex Mini converters.

The Teranex Mini 12G-SDI to Quad Link SDI model can also act as a video wall processor as you can take the Ultra HD and send a HD tile out to 4 separate screens.

And New Teranex Mini SDI Distribution 12G

We also have another new Teranex Mini model and this one is called Teranex Mini SDI Distribution.

This new model is a 12G-SDI distribution converter that lets you send any SD, HD or Ultra HD video connection out to 8 separate 12G-SDI outputs, so you can send a single SDI connection to multiple devises. Like all the Teranex Mini converters it will automatically switch to the SDI input format and handles all SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI rates.

Because these new models are part of the Teranex Mini family, you can also add the Teranex Mini Smart Panel to see what you are converting on the front panel.

These new Teranex Mini models will be available in a few weeks for $495 US from all Blackmagic Design dealers worldwide.

        But apparantly it is there:

        DaVinci Resolve 12 Final Release

Lastly we have a quick update on DaVinci Resolve which has been received extremely well and we have been getting fantastic feedback.

We have added many of the suggestions you have told us about and we have listened as you have used the new features on real jobs and told us how they performed. DaVinci Resolve is stable and worked very well and today we have just posted the release version of DaVinci Resolve 12 to our website.

We would really like to thank everyone that helped us beta test DaVinci Resolve and for all the wonderful feedback you have given us. Their advice has been greatly appreciated. Now we are going to get busy working on the next DaVinci Resolve so please keep talking to us and helping us make it even better!

This provides artists control to HDR, but retaining the HDR that came out of the camera in the first place is a key issue.
