  • IBC: Thomson compresses HDR

Thomson announced Live contribution HDR, when I asked about live HDR grading I was told they worked with pre-generated metadata, like every other HEVC compression vendor demonstrating HDR distrubtion. So I did not see any contribution demo with HDR10 and the associated SMPTE 2086 metadata on mastering display brightness and so on.

Thomson emphasised that it works with all HDR systems, besides the Dolby Vision system demonstrated at Hispasat, it also works with Technicolor Prime, according to Stéphane Cloirec Director Product Management at Thomson Video Networks. He expanded on the live HDR contribution and broadcast solutions: "yes we required some-one else to provide the HDR grading and metadata, we integrate it into our live encoder, what we show here is the end result". However the announcement above also refers to an HDR10, or Open HDR solution for live contribution for instance live sporting events that generates the HDR meta data on the basis of the SMPTE 2084 (EOTF) and 2086 (metadata) standards. Apparently there is a division between contribution and broadcast (Dolby Vision and Technicolor prime) approaches to HDR and HEVC compression.
