  • IBC: Fraunhofer's HDR 10

The Fraunhofer research institutes´ display did not identify the type of HDR it was showing, but Benjamin Bross the Programme Leader at Heinrich Herz Institute Fraunhofer´s broadcast and video institute informed me they used HDR10. "We showed ST 2084 PQ transfer curve with ST 2086 Metadata (aka HDR10 used by Blu-ray) since this is the system currently supported by the Samsung SUHD that we used at IBC".

Backwards compatible DolbyVision, the Philips single stream HDR technology, and Technicolor Prime, are optional in the upcoming 4K Blu/Ray standard unlike the HDR only HDR10 approach that is compulary in the new Blu/Ray standard.

He added: "I can tell you that our HEVC live encoder supports signalization for video created for both SMPTE 2084 + 2086 and the BBC HLG. In a first 4K HDR live broadcast trial with Sky and Sony, our live encoder was used and both curves have been tested". Bross refers to Sky deutschlands trial 4K HDR coverage on August 1st of the DFL Supercup between VFL Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich, the German Football cupfinal. A Sony HDC-4300 camera delivered HDR images in different formats to a range of Sony Ultra-HD TVs, and of course the Fraunhofer live encoder.

The Samsung Curved SUHD is very shiny, with dark content it turns into a mirror, so only bright content shows off the HDR capabilities, under bright tradeshow lighting conditions.
