  • US Cable Co.s trialing 4K service using SES managed Ultra HD platform

Satellite operator SES is conducting 4K trials with a number of US cable companies. The cable operators are testing Ultra HD (or 4K) content across its fully-managed Ultra HD platform and receiving HEVC 4K IP set top boxes in preparation for Ultra HD subscriber trials into US households later this year.

SES has signed Ultra HD trial agreements with Cable America in Missouri, Golden West Telecommunications in South Dakota, MTC Cable in New York, Sjoberg's Cable TV in Minnesota and ATMC in North Carolina. As part of the programme aimed at accelerating 4K delivery to homes across America, SES is shipping 4K/HEVC set top boxes to cable operators participating in the first-ever Ultra HD trials.

These are smaller regional operators that benefit from outsourcing the content delivery taking in a pre-packaged feed, with or without subscriber management, SES seems to offer such a platform in this trial ahead of service launch, as the boxes for full service launch are being awaited.

After purchasing more than four million Ultra HD TVs last year and a projected 10 million in 2016 in the US alone, consumers are increasingly demanding 4K content from their cable operators. Using the multicasting capability of the DOCSIS 3.0 transmission standard and traditional digital TV to deliver a wide range of 4K programming to subscriber homes, SES is enabling even the smallest cable operators to be among the first in North America to provide linear and live Ultra HD. Unlike current internet-delivered 4K offerings, SES's managed solution, delivered over dedicated bandwidth, provides a much higher quality viewer experience, free of buffering and network congestion.

SES is currently carrying four Ultra HD channels on satellites serving every cable system and nearly 100 million homes across North America, including Fashion One 4K, NASA TV UHD, and High 4K TV. The fourth choice on SES's regional 4K dial is SES's own UHD1 channel, which has quickly become a popular venue for up-and-coming 4K content producers creating great Ultra HD material with an eye toward ultimately launching their own Ultra HD channels. Cable operators of all sizes across North America can easily downlink 4K content from SES's growing Ultra HD satellite platform to test the mix of 4K movies, TV shows, news, and sports events across their networks.
"As millions of cable subscribers increasingly press for 4K content on their new Ultra HD TVs, some of the smallest cable operators in the US are now leading the way to bringing Ultra HD to homes across the country," noted Steve Corda, Vice President of Business Development in North America at SES. "SES's breakthrough, fully-managed Ultra HD platform is enabling us to conduct the first-ever trials, which are bound to play a key role in the national and global rollout of Ultra HD."

"Ultra HD has arrived in Minnesota, as we prepare to deliver 4K content to subscriber homes this year," said Richard Sjoberg, President and CEO at Sjoberg, a cable television innovator serving 33 towns in Northwest Minnesota. "Along with high-speed broadband, we're seeing an increasing demand for Ultra HD across our subscriber base, and together with SES we're on the leading edge of technology, with a simplified solution that will make the transition to Ultra HD far faster and more efficient. We're looking forward to being among the first in the country to deliver game-changing television to our customers."

"We are excited to be participating in this trial focused on offering Ultra HD content to our customers," said Glen Faulkner, General Manager at MTC Cable in upstate New York.  "The SES solution provides an economical platform for the delivery of Ultra HD content, which is now more frequently requested by our customers.  The cable television industry, with high-capacity DOCSIS 3 networks widely deployed, is well-positioned to be at the forefront in delivery of this high resolution content."

NEW WAVE OF CABLE OPERATORS INITIATE ULTRA HD TRIALS WITH SES

Subscribers on the verge of receiving first-ever linear UHD delivery to US homes
LUXEMBOURG, 9 November 2016 -- SES S.A. (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) today announced that four more US cable operators are testing 4K content delivery across SES's fully-managed Ultra HD platform, in advance of breakthrough Ultra HD subscriber trials set to begin later this year.

SES has struck new Ultra HD trial agreements with Marquette-Adams in Wisconsin, Buckeye Broadband in Ohio and Southeast Michigan, Service Electric Cable TV in Pennsylvania, and enTouch Systems in Texas, and now has eight operators currently assessing the satellite-based UHD solution aimed at accelerating 4K delivery to homes across America. The first wave of trials kicked off this past summer with Cable America in Missouri, Golden West Telecommunications in South Dakota, MTC Cable in New York, and Sjoberg's Cable TV in Minnesota.

The SES Ultra HD solution leverages the scalability of satellite and delivery options, using either managed IP multicast DOCSIS 3.0 streams (versus over-the-top Internet connections) or traditional digital QAM transport streams. With its pre-packaged Ultra HD platform, SES combines Ultra HD channels, 4K set top boxes and reception gear in a cost-effective service, which is enabling small and medium tier cable operators to be among the first in North America to provide linear and live Ultra HD to subscriber homes. SES's managed Ultra HD solution is delivered over dedicated bandwidth, providing a much higher quality viewer experience compared to current Internet-delivered 4K offerings susceptible to buffering and network congestion.

SES is not only fast-tracking Ultra HD home delivery.  The world's leading satellite operator also has the largest global Ultra HD channel line-up, with 30 Ultra HD channels worldwide. These include seven channels hosted aboard two SES satellites (SES-1, SES-3) at the centre of the orbital arc, serving nearly 100 million homes across North America.

"Cable operators participating in the trials have been impressed with how easy it is to implement Ultra HD across their networks with SES's pre-packaged solution. Ultra HD TV sales and demand for 4K content are both reaching unprecedented levels, and SES is leveraging the scalability and reliability of satellite to accelerate the delivery of Ultra HD to homes throughout North America," explained Steve Corda, Vice President of Business Development in North America for SES. "SES has developed a fully-managed Ultra HD platform capable of quenching the increasingly insatiable appetite for Ultra HD. We are the leader in Ultra HD across North America and the world with the largest bouquet of UHD programming, and our UHD multiplex and neighbourhood has become the UHD destination of choice."

"Ultra HD is on the verge of becoming an exciting reality for our subscribers, who are buying new Ultra HD TVs in anticipation of the best viewing experience available today," noted Danny White, Director of Product Management, enTouch Systems. "enTouch is well positioned to provide game-changing 4K content quickly and cost effectively to our customers across the Greater Houston area, thanks to our collaboration with SES and its breakthrough Ultra HD solution."
"We will soon be testing a great mix of 4K movies, cutting-edge TV shows, news and sporting event coverage from SES's growing, satellite-based Ultra HD platform, with plans to deliver Ultra HD to subscriber homes on the horizon," said Brad Mefferd, Chief Administrative Officer, Buckeye Broadband. "The fact that the SES solution works over existing, high-capacity DOCSIS 3.0 cable networks and traditional digital QAM will enable us to be flexible in how we distribute Ultra HD content in our markets."

"Ultra HD has arrived in Wisconsin and we're just days away from delivering compelling 4K content to our subscriber homes," said Shane McCann, Network Engineer for Marquette- Adams. "SES's innovative and simplified platform solution has really allowed us to leap ahead to reliable and scalable technologies that have made the transition to Ultra HD much faster and more efficient."

LUXEMBOURG – 27 February 2017 – SES S.A. (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) today announced Frontier Communications Corporation has begun testing 4K Ultra HD content delivery using SES's fully-managed Ultra HD distribution platform.

Frontier is the latest multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) to join SES's milestone trials aimed at accelerating Ultra HD delivery to homes across North America. SES has a growing number of cable and television system operators currently evaluating the satellite-based Ultra HD solution in an effort to provide the Ultra HD programming to their subscribers this year.

SES's managed Ultra HD platform is delivered over dedicated satellite bandwidth, which provides a much higher quality viewer experience compared to current Internet-delivered 4K offerings susceptible to bottlenecks, buffering and network congestion. Currently home to nine linear Ultra HD channels, the platform provides the largest bundle of Ultra HD programming in North America.

"We are optimistic that SES's innovative, pre-packaged Ultra HD solution will allow for a smooth transition of Ultra HD delivery to Frontier subscriber homes nationwide," said Steve Ward, SVP of Video Technology & Content for Frontier Communications.

"MVPDs across the country have been extremely impressed with our Ultra HD channel lineup and how satellite is enabling them to leap frog to the latest transmission technologies in order to accelerate the delivery of Ultra HD to their subscriber homes," explained Steve Corda, Vice President of Business Development for SES in North America.

SES. S.A. says more than 15 cable operators are now testing its managed 4K/Ultra HD after adding a handful of additional MSOs to the mix.
The latest to ink UHD trial agreements include Aureon in Iowa, GVTC Communications in Texas, Highlands Cable Group in North Carolina, KPU Telecommunications in Alaska, Service Electric in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and Shrewsbury Community Cable in Massachusetts.
Others announced trial partners include Armstrong, Buckeye Broadband, Cable America Missouri, Entouch Systems, Golden West Cablevision, Frontier Communications, KPU Telecommunications, MTC Cable, and Marquette Adams Communications.

Also sees operators skimping on bandwidth:

18 Mbps was a key bit-rate target, he said, because cable operators stressed that it’s important that they can fit two 4K TV signals into a 6 MHz-wide channel. On SES’s end, that bit rate also enables the company to balance video quality and cost, while also allowing four UHD signals to fit into a satellite transponder, and up to 16 UHD channels to be re-multiplexed on a satellite receiver
