  • An alternative to RealD Precision White Screen.

RealD is in over half of the 3D cinema theaters in the world. Silver screens are required for passive 3D systems to maintain polarization and remove "ghosting". Many exhibitors and integrators are not happy with silver screens, it is often criticized because of the bright hot spot created by the projector beam in the central part of the screen due to its silver coating. Complaints focus on the use of silver screens for traditional 2D screenings.
RealD recently announced a new screen "Precision White Screen"
While marketing focuses on the term "White" the screen is actually Silver but at a much lower gain. The results greatly reduce hot spotting to an acceptable level for 2D screening.
Both Severtson and Stewart Film Screen have released a low gain version silver screen. I recently spent some time with the Severtson named S?Vision 3D GX silver screen. Severtson's Signal to noise ratio is an astounding 250:1. They are one of the few RealD 3D certified cinema screens available.
I have a long history using Silver screens and I can say this screen with a gain of 1.4 greatly reduced hot spotting to a level much closer to that of a matt white screen. The screen exhibits the typical Silver greyish base color.
To my eye there is slight fall off at the corners visible using test patterns barley noticeable when projecting movie content. A very big and welcomed improvement.
Below are a few images of the S?Vision 3D GX silver screen 1.4 gain under real world conditions.
    Highly recommended.

Hit with 2k Xenon @ 100IRE. Uniformity is greatly improved.

Severtson screens have serious artifacts like if a sandstorm blew over them after they were painted. The RealD Ultimate screen is really the only way to enjoy 3d and 2D Hdr in projection, i have seen it with the Barco THOR and the image looked like a giant Quantum Dots display.

I am a believer in redirecting the light to the audience, it creates a natural shadowbox effect that unity gains spew light sideways and you can see, even in a black velvet shadowbox i see it.

The 2.8 gain 60 degree allows you to max the cr. in the optics thus creating a very convincing high EDR image. It appears to get sharper and more colorful psycho visually.

I agree I see this texture on their Silver screens, I have no experience with their other surfaces.

The RealD Ultimate Screen is a significant improvement over the previous Precision White Screen.  The Ultimate Screen has the best performance of any projection screen currently on the market, by using an "engineered" surface coated with a thin deposition layer of aluminum.  By doing away with the typical aluminum flakes, it has a very high stereo contrast (up to 700:1) and the highest possible Total Integrated Scatter (TIS) of over 90%.  The improved TIS means that there is a much broader half-gain angle -- the hotspot is largely eliminated.  It also uses very small (150 micron) laser punched perforations for acoustic transparency, compared to about 1mm die-cut perforations in typical PVC screens.  (This is possible because the Ultimate Screen uses a high-modulus plastic substrate rather  than PVC).  The small perforations are invisible from 1m away, and the void is less than 1% of screen area, compared to 4-5% void on a typical micro-perf screen.

Sorry-  don't mean for this to sound like a sales pitch!  It's just that this is a very cool, and underappreciated new technology.

Preaching to the choir namesake. It is criminal to use any other screen in projection, enthusiasts are clueless to what they are missing even in 2D HDR it is by far the finest screen.

Peter and Pete, sounds wonderful, it is a shame it has limited distribution and not attainable to a wider channel.

Also when compared side by side to a silver screen and a unity gain white screen, when showing a whitefield the RealD is clearly the whitest of all.
