  • Barco Laser Proto - End product is slightly longer than B chassis

    Head unit is quiet but you need to run water hoses to chiller unit.

    Looks like a Military weapon. It will be interesting to see the production design.
    Question, Why the need for water cooling wasn't reduced heat a benefits of Laser.

      I'm guessing the total BTU's are probably much lower than a xenon arc lamp, but the heat is concentrated at the lasers requiring liquid cooling since it's more efficient at carrying away the heat. Depending on the cooling requirements, an active (i.e. refrigerant) system rather than the usual 'passive' forced air or fan-cooled radiator system may be needed, and that is something you don't want/need at the head..

      LED light-bulbs throw off MUCH less heat than an incandescent, but they need serious heat sinking at the bulb, something the old bulbs didn't need.

        That makes sense and most likely the case. Thank you.

          Everything you always wanted to know about laser cooling, but were afraid to ask...

                Cinemeccanica Laser Projector is already up and running at IMG Cinemas in Italy. I have not been able to look inside the projection booth but it looks big.

                  Can you comment on picture quality, did you notice any speckles.

                      I have seen "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" in HFR 3D. The screen is the MDI Strong HIGHWHITE coupled with RealD system. Image quality is simply the best I've ever seen, with zero ghosting and absolutely no issue usually associated to laser projection, so no metamerism, and no speckle at all. I've been very carefully to "search" these issues especially in scenes with grass and green colors, and I've not been able to spot it a single time. How can Cinemeccanica achive what Barco, Christie, Sony, NEC can't achieve? I think it is just a couple of factor:
                      1) Screen dimension is Scope 15m long, so it is not a giant screen a laser is better suited for (You can get the 7FL or 14FL even using a traditional DLP or SXRD);
                      2) The Projector is BIG, if not ENORMOUS, and AFAIK it is liquid cooled, and at least one laser source is rumored to be dead after the screening I have attended, so realiability is not at the top.

                        Sounds promising thanks for the follow up, glad to hear PQ does not disappoint. Reliability issues are expect with any new platform hopefully as the prototype matures the technology will prove stable and efficient. Please keep us posted with any updates.

                        Thank you.

                            How quiet is this unit. If first generation laser has a limit of 5000 lumens due to UL approval water cooling should reduce the number of fans needed if this were a lamp driven projector..

                              50 decibel for head unit, chiller in inches 26 wide by 29 deep by 42 high. My best guesses.
