  • JVC4K Pr. RS3000/ NX9 short Test with surprise…..

Got today one of the first new JVC 4K pr. the NX9 from Oliver Klohs a very knowledge home cinema dealer in Germany and OPPO Digital European Distributor.

After warm-up about 1 hour I start first with some UHD Disc to have a first look.
They are: Passengers, Lucy, Dunkirk and Mamma Mia 2.

Second was to measures the most important parameters.
Please note that all following measurements are made with full zoom (biggest picture) no iris at all and max. lamp power color calibrated by Oliver Klohs.
    Full panel use of 4096x2160.
E shift switch of as it only produce negative effects like more noise less good picture over all as picture was some way a bit wash out compare to switch of.

“””Please JVC if you read do not put anymore a 8K e-shift in a further 4k pr. as it is only a stupid feature that made the picture less good (ansi cr.!) and cost money.”””
    No one need it!
No one see at any normally distance to the screen even very close pixels!
This is only marketing and destroy the possibility to show a better 4K picture!

    I found:
    1855 center lumen
    Cr. on off 23100:1
Ansi I do not measure but Oliver measure about 270:1.

As my new screen is a fabric screen the V6 from “Dream Screens”  that had only about 0,8 gain the X9 can of course not light up my whole screen ( 7.2 meter wide 21:9) even not with the Isco 1.25 anamorphic lens.
Funny was that I try and was surprised that only 6,4 FTL to the eye looks dim but somehow ok.

After this I going back to 3.6 meter wide (at 24 ftl) as this was the size of screen at my holiday house where I like to upgrade my existing Sony VW760.

Picture looks sharp without some kind of electronic filtering that Sony always have that you cannot switch off.
So the X9 show a nice very detailed picture with good blacks and good color.

Since I hear first information about this pr. I  hope that it will be true that the X9 can do about double as good on off cr. compare to the Sony LCOS pr. and this was almost reality.
The ansi cr. is about good 30% lower than most 4K Sony Pr. and if you are sensitive about it and you have the right room you may can see this.

Opposite to the Sony where I can found on all models in some sequences color banding the JVC was free from this bug.

On the negative side there was a bug when I switch content or change the disc or start the pr. new that it always change the last picture settings.
This was bad as it made this test very time consuming as there is not a drop down menu where you can select the right one with one klick.
You have to manually klick true it
and you can only move one step wise and pr. need around 10 sec. or more to synch picture again for every change.
Then you have to repeat depends on what setting you like to recall and what setting is the start setting this procedure sometimes 5 times to get to the right one.
This can take you 1.5 min. to select the right settings!
Looks like this was a bug from this unit but as I anyway return the pr.as I just get it for a test.
Looks like the NX9 not store the last settings and by change the input or switch pr. down it going to other different settings.

Negative was the bright corners that was visible at iris max. open and increased visible when you select for sample -8 with the iris.
Then it looks like the corners will be no change in brightness but center of the picture gets dimmer.
See also the picture that show this bug with iris position -8 and no iris.
Please note that under normally viewing condition you do not see it this way ( I use long exposer time to show it) but you can see bright corners in a dark room if you look for it.

Sharpness was good but not as good as I remember from the Z1 the laser pr. from JVC some time ago.

In low lamp mode the pr. is super quiet but in high lamp at least some fans sounds a bit strange and it is a bit noisy for my taste.

One very strange thing are comes up during this small test!
When I measure on off cr. I found that playback the test pattern form “Ryan Masciola, Diversified Video Soltutions” in UHD HDR 4K via the OPPO UHD player at "source direct"  about 23.000:1 on off cr. almost the same as Oliver found with his measurements about 25.000:1.

BUT I cannot found this high number in ANY UHD Disc I have try!!!
I mean in a real movie I should be measure the same high 23.000:1 but there I found with some movies only 11.000:1 some other movie show 16.000:1 but never close to the test pattern.
This was very strange and made a big question mark.
Why test pictures show this high cr. and in the real movie itself I cannot repeat this high numbers

One sample is Passengers UHD Disc.
In the beginning the picture show the SONY logo followed by the Columbia Tristar Lady.
In some of this sequence the picture show an almost full bright picture and when you use this part as 100% white and divide it to a sequence that show 100% black in the first 3 sec. in the beginning of the movie you can get only 11.000:1 so far less what the test pictures show!

So I try this with my Barco Thor today and found the same.
With the 700 nit that I normally use as clipping point for all HDR (adjustments inside the Barco Thor) I measure about half the cr. the test pattern
“Ryan Masciola, Diversified Video Soltutions” have!

So it looks to me that this is not a JVC bug from this pr. it looks like this is a bug that are coming from HDR system itself.
I have not any idea may someone that know what cause it can post here an explanation.
The only thing I saw when testing my Barco Thor with it was that the lower nit number I put inside where it clips the brighter the picture get.
For sample most time in the past I use 600-700 nit clipping point. There my contrast is about half the max. cr. my Thor have (about 6.000:1).
Going now down to 300 nit clipping picture gets a lot brighter and at the same time black do not change so cr. goes up to 6000:1.
The trade of was that you saw less HDR effect but can it be real that droping cr. to half when you like to see a big HDR effect?

This can be a global and general problem with possible any pr. any HDR content!
It will be a nightmare that you have a pr. with a high cr. and the only non HDR content can show this high cr.

Beside this strange issue with measuring cr. on off the pr. show a nice really good picture.
For most screen sizes till 5 meter wide this is a top projector.
I hope JVC will have based on this projector in future a high lumen output Pr. in the + 5000 Lumen range.

Nice unbiased report. So it is not perfect ( what is ) but sounds like it is a nice projector with nice on/off contrast. Some things are better than the Sony but Sony has better ANSI.

Thanks for review. So, what is Your  opinion? Does the RX9 has better picture (contrast and black level etc) and is it  overall better projector than Sony VW760?
Are You testing a Sony VW870 as well?
I have the VW 870 and it was noticeable upgrade over VW760.
But I’m interested of that is the RX9 even better?
(But going back from laser to lamp scares me..)

        Hard to say.

I have also a very good Sony 760 and picture was very good.
But this unit is in my holiday house so i can not compare side by side.

From what I hear from people that compare the Sony 870 to the X9 side by side some will pick the X9 some the 870.
What some people not like is this filtering that you can not switch of with the Sony but other like it.
Banding was for many a issue.
X9 no banding all Sony have banding.
It is not a day and night difference.
The cr. on off is about half with Sony compare to X9 the Ansi the Sony 870 is better.
870 have a laser for long time high lumen X9 not.

Both Pr. are very good for sure and both have there pro and con.
If I was you I will stay with the Sony 870 as the differences will be not so big for sure.

Has anyone here ever seen the 6000/3000 lumens ones using the larger 1.27" imagers?

Or the 0.69" LCoS chips https://eu.jvc.com/pro/projectors/simulation-projectors/DLA-VS4700/. This one looks like a commercial version of the Z1?
